let's be social!
I’m pretty excited to share this post with you! As you know from my previous post, Realization, we have been moving this week…and not just a few things here and there kind of move, but really moving our stuff and ourselves into the camper. It’s been a very busy spring break week, and it’s been an emotionally charged week as well.
However, in addition to that, we have made some serious progress on making the camper feel a little more like a home. Since I’ve been working full time and Blaise has been injured, we had put the remodel on hold, but the warm weather and the time off gave us some much-needed encouragement.
Here’s the place that we will soon call our home sweet home…
Okay, the kitchen is probably the most dramatic improvement! We painted all of the cabinets and cabinet doors white, replaced all of the brass handles with sleek, stainless steel handles, painted the wall the charcoal gray, and painted the refrigerator door and then painted the front panels with chalkboard paint for meal planning, to-do lists, etc. We will also be replacing at least the faucet, as it leaks some, but hopefully the sink as well.
Here was the kitchen before the remodel…
When we first bought the camper, there were two couches…two! We obviously don’t need two couches, so we gave one away immediately to make room for our dining “room” table. It took me a few months of surfing Pinterest, IKEA, and various camper remodel websites for ideas on exactly what would make the most sense for a camper dining table. I finally settled on this lovely IKEA table (Norden) because of its space-saving flexibility. The table has two tops that both fold down (obviously we have only one folded up) and six small drawers underneath for extra storage. Also, because the space is small, we decided to go with stools instead of full-sized chairs, and once we got it all set up we realized what a great choice that was, because the stools are must easier to move around and great to simply tuck away. I still have to finish sewing my curtain panels, but you can see that the new paint and furniture have made a HUGE difference…
Ignore the ugly floral sofa…that will be the very next thing to go!
Blaise actually chose the wall color for our office nook. I was skeptical at first because I was afraid that the dark, dark color in such a small space would only make it feel smaller; however, the camper is not short on windows and natural light, and the white furniture and trim really pop against the charcoal color. I hung pictures (yes, in a camper…the trick is screws versus nails and velcro to keep the pictures from tilting when we walk about the camper) and curtains, and I absolutely love it! The desk is also from IKEA (trestle legs and a table top)
This was a Christmas gift from my cousin’s soon-to-be-wife, Megan, whom I adore. She drew this picture by hand for us, and I was SO excited to finally hang it in the camper as a reminder of the place we will soon call home!
We still have some trimming to do and we plan to replace the carpet with laminate wood flooring (so our dog won’t muddy up carpet when it rains), but this is the almost-finished living area.
Here’s the bedroom…small, but very comfortable. We painted the walls, replaced all of the bedding (well, I still have to move ours over) and curtains, and painted the cabinets. We put in the same handles as in the kitchen, and we will soon be rehanging a mirror on the back wall. The other big thing that I need to do in there is replace the light fixtures with something with much less brass/fake gold!
Again, to help you remember, here’s a before picture of the bedroom…
I’m just getting started on the bathroom. I saved it for last because as the smallest space, it will be the most challenging! However, I am done painting the cabinets and replacing the handles. I just have to paint the walls, take out the shower door, and replace it with a curtain.
Not too shabby, eh?
My fiance and I move around… A LOT. Our friends call us gypsies and my god-mother jokingly mentioned we should just get a camper or RV and live in it. This has got us thinking. I'd heard of people remodeling their camper/RV and started browsing. Yours is beautiful! I was just curious… what size is it? You've made it seem so spacious! We've been discussing a 20' camper to tow behind us vs. an RV to tow a more fuel efficient car. Being vagabond yourself, do you have any suggestions?
