Kerrie had told me about them before, but I had yet to try one: the Ugandan rolex.  They are a popular food that you can purchase for 800 to 1000/= (shillings) at almost any roadside canteen.  One afternoon, Kerrie and I were on Kibuli Road getting some groceries at Kibuli Supermarket.  We decided to take a little stroll down the road to visit a clothing/fabric store that we had been eyeing for a while, and on the way we saw a little roadside canteen that happened to be selling rolexes…so we decided that was as good a time as any!

We entered the shack and ordered our rolexes, for 1,000/= each (about $0.40).  We, of course, attracted a small gathering, as people crowded in to get a look at the two bzungu ordering food in their canteen! They cooked and laughed and stared, and eventually we walked away with some hot and tasty rolexes.  In case you don’t know (and I didn’t), a rolex is chipati (thin bread) with an omlet rolled up inside…yummo!

Here’s the canteen on Kibuli Road…

Yes, I ate food from there…and yes, my intestines responded VIOLENTLY!
