On Monday, July 9, 2012 South Sudan celebrated one year of independence. We rejoiced that the nation is still independent, as a year ago there had been much speculation that it wouldn’t last too long. We also rejoiced that there has been much work done in South Sudan throughout this last year, and we are excited and optimistic about the future.
Now, that is not to say that there aren’t some serious challenges still facing the country, and maybe even more than before independence. Over this last year, there was a lot of inter-tribal violence, there were skirmishes on the border with the North over oil fields, and there was a huge corruption scandal. The country still lacks most of the basic infrastructure such as roads, schools, hospitals, and a solid income. They are still far from their dreams of a thriving, surviving society; however, they are also still free. Free to practice the religion of their choice, free to move about the country, and free to let their voices be heard.
We pray diligently for this fledgling nation of South Sudan, for its government, and for its people. We know that change takes a very long time, and that it is a tremendous effort to begin a country from absolutely nothing. Look at the United States and how long and hard Americans fought to secure their freedoms and build any kind of real infrastructure. Change takes time.
We are excited to be a part of the work that is going on in South Sudan, and we are especially excited to be witness to the Gospel being preached freely throughout the country. Please join us in praying for South Sudan as it moves into its second year as a nation. Let’s cover this nation in prayer!
