While Blaise was there, we ventured back down to the Kanyagoga “slums” again with Grace so that Blaise could see his studio, and then so we could tour the area. The area was bustling, the children swarmed us, and we did get to walk to areas I had never been. It was a little more heartbreaking the second time around…something about urban decay seems worse to me than rural poverty. I don’t know why, but it seems like a harder life.
Anyway, here’s Kanyagoga once again…
This was in a dump, and this broke my heart. This child’s father was digging through the heaps of rubbish looking for anything salvageable, and this child sat nearby. The child wasn’t sitting right in the rubbish mounds, but this area was far from clean…
These kiddos followed us a fair distance as we walked. Once I realized how far we had gone away from where we found them, I asked Grace to tell them to go home. I love the kiddos, but I don’t want them getting lost or hurt! Oh, and you can see the rubbish piles behind me. The child in the photo above was sitting about 20 feet from where we took this picture…
They are ADORABLE!
This is a still (where they brew alcohol). Fancy, huh?
